Mechanical (wind up or weight) clocks should be cleaned and checked every 5 years.
A cleaning requires the clock be completely dismantled, cleaned, inspected with repairs if necessary, reassembled, lubricated and the timing adjusted.
The most common repair is to fix the ends and holes where the clock gears turns. Over time the oil used to lubricate the gears dries and becomes sticky like tar, this will cause the holes to become oval and the clock will run slow or stop.
